Tidy Towns report. (cont., )
There are many lovely wildlife aspects and projects dotted through Drumsna. Your adjudicator was particularly taken with your people’s orchard, what a clever use of this area. There was a metal bin for ashes only which was not in use at the time of your adjudicator’s visit. What is at the composting here? It was not found.
The wild garden needs to be strimmed once a year, after the flowers have self seeded, and the cuttings removed to prevent a build up of nutrients. The butterfly garden is a good concept but does not work very well- the inclusion of evergreen in this bed would not offer much for Ireland’s wildlife. The bat trail and it’s information was excellent to read.
Stepping stone foot prints through the wildflower area at the marina was another lovely touch. At the entrance to the marina there is a wire fence. It is suggested that this would be an ideal place to install a native hedge as it would fit with the rural landscape here, help wildlife and screen this area.
With the attendance of the group at recent wildlife training, perhaps they can start to collate a wildlife audit for the area. This would then form recommendations to raise awareness and enhance wildlife through Drumsna.
More next week.
