Tidy Towns results.2012.
The built environment ;
The Centre and surrounds of Drumsna are beautifully presented. The bridge is a wonderful structure and the picnic area allows great views to admire it’s construction ( and inhabitants –bats ). It is hoped that necessary repairs are carried out soon. The shops, pubs and guesthouse in the village all compliment each other. The maintenance of older buildings such as the Wesley Church was noted. The new fence at the old National school was admired. It is good that this building is still used. The roof was intact and the windows could benefit from some painting to protect them. There is a lovely 2-storey house opposite with sash windows and a wrought iron gate. The Church is presented very nicely with the cluster of planters softening the area by it’ s front doors. The street furniture was painted green. The red painted railings of the antique shop was beautifully presented as was the famine pot.
With the proposed playground at the top of the village, it would be worth erecting a map and notice at the marina notifying people of the range of facilities in the village. Many may be drawn into the village but not make it as far as the green area.
Landscaping;
There are some wonderful landscaping features throughout Drumsna and the clever use of trees really add to the sense of presence in the centre of the village. It was good to see the area at the base of trees mulched and well tended. The public herb garden is another clever idea that could draw boat owners up into the village. The cluster of planters, some 3 tiered, in strategic areas also helped enhance the village. Perhaps the resource centre could have proper outdoor chairs or a bench along the Main street .
The use of shrubs and trees at fair green was admired. The planting of climbing plants to screen the basketball court was also admired.
The adjudicator was intrigued by the time capsule and was dying to know it’s contents!
