St Brigid.
Next Tuesday is the first day of February and is the Feast of St Brigid who is also known as the Mary of the Gaels. St Brigid was born approx 451 to a Pagan father and a Christian mother who was also a slave. When pregnant with Brigid her mother met a Bishop who predicted that her child would do many great things ,this Bishop was St. Mel who later consecrated Brigid to become the first Irish nun .The Saint set up an order of nuns in Ardagh but later moved to Kildare where the King of Leinster told her she could build her Convent on whatever amount of ground that her cloak covered . Miraculously the cloak spread over many acres and covered all of what is now known as The Curragh. During her travels St. Brigid visited a dying pagan Chieften , she began to weave one of her crosses from the rushes spread about the floor and as she formed the green rushes she told him the story of Christ and the meaning of the Cross, he took the Faith and was baptised before he died . The tradition of making St. Brigid crosses continues on throughout Ireland until this day .
St. Brigid is the patron Saint of Dairy Maids , Infants , Blacksmiths , Poets , Nuns and Students .
