Brian Boru millennium concert

The Brian Boru Millennium Concert held in Annaduff Community Centre, on Sunday last, 10-10-10, was an outstanding success. The standard of music, song and dance was as good as could be experienced anywhere in Ireland. First up were the six able tin whistle players of Annaduff NS (teacher Padraic Sweeney) – Louise Gaffney, Chloe Daniels, Katie Moreau, Emer Quigley, Colm Fitzpatrick and Áine McHugh. Later on, Emer Quigley performed some sparkling Sean Nós dancing.

Shauna and Rebecca Banet, from Rooskey, delighted all with lovely songs in English and in Irish. The trio of Hannah Farrell and sisters Sorcha agus Sibéil McNamara showed us that the great fiddle/flute music of this region is alive and well. Dancers Eva McLoughlin and Clara Reid left us in no doubt as to why they were chosen to represent Ireland, in Scotland, for several days of last weekend.Winners at the recent All Ireland Fleadh in Cavan, sisters Orla, Niamh and Sarah Ward, from Aughnasheelin, played first-class music on a variety of instruments, with Sarah also doing wonderful Sean Nós dancing. Irene Guckian and her siblings Emer, Déirdre and Brendan were also to the fore along with Ann McGuinness, Brian Mostyn, Patrick Campbell and Clare Bohan and her brother Brendan.Antoinette McGuinness gave beautiful traditional renditions of the songs “My Own Leitrim Home” and “The Rollin’ from The Wall”. Emer Reynolds, from Rooskey, but with deep roots in Annaduff, must possess the best female voice in Ireland. The title of one of her songs, “Voice of an Angel”, sums up her well-trained voice. Emer’s brother, Andrew, was her brilliant accompanist on the keyboard. A mighty finale was achieved when about twenty of the musicians played together in great order for about twenty minutes. The Boru Committee wishes to thank the large number of people who combined to make the day so enjoyable. The hope is that young musicians, singers and dancers will be inspired to continue to really scale the heights. Here’s another challenge for the people of this area – to use our fine Community Centre to put on a couple of one-act plays for the coming spring.
