The first Anthony Trollope Summer School was a great success  from the opening ceremony on Friday evening for which  Drumsna Councillor Sinead Guckian acted as M. C. for the evening . Colleen Guckian spoke on behalf of the Drumsna Trollope group and also for Drumsna Development Association in the absence of the chair Geraldine Monaghan  The Caoitherlach of Leitrim County council Frank Dolan opened the Summer school with a flourish and wished the conference well while our very own benign Mr Trollope aka Jim Gannon kept an experienced  eye on the proceedings.

Saturdays lectures were exceedingly well attended with a wonderful medley of subjects including Landlords, Famine and society With Gerard Mc Atasney Belfast, Petty middlemen and a brittle society with Dr. Jennifer Kelly Maynooth, ‘’Ireland made me’’ with Dr Yvonne Siddle University of Chester, The Macdermots of Ballycloran With M/s Priscilla Hungerford .Questions and answers was a lively discussion with delegates enjoying the fray . At 4. 15.pm we joined the Leitrim sub Aqua Club where Gerry Gilroy discovered a post box including a message in an ink bottle in the depths of the Shannon at Drumsna Quay .This caused immense excitement amongst the Trollopians  .

Saturday nights Banquet in the Bush Hotel was a lively affair with guest speaker Mary Kenny who was accompanied by her Husband Writer Richard West adding to the enjoyment of the occasion.

Just as a footnote I am delighted to report that Mr Frank Mc Nally Of The Irish Times in his Irishman’s Diary devoted his piece on Saturday to our Summer School here in Drumsna and to Trollope and Mary Kenny gave us a mention in the Irish Independent weekender.

On a beautiful sunny Sunday some of the hardier delegates joined Noel Duignan for the walk along the Trollope trail and on to Ballycloran where Trollope was honored with a plaque on the bridge and delegates then returned to Drumsna for the Premiere of the locally produced film ‘’Macdermots ‘’. which was very well received by visitors and locals alike Mr Donal Fox and M/sHelen Rutter interviewed the stars on the red carpet .
