The Anthony Trollope Summer School.

English Author Anthony Trollope came to Drumsna in 1843 on Post Office business .The Post Office was where Mc Loughlin’s Pub now is. He stayed at the  Ivy Tree Inn which is  now Taylor’s Pub. He got the inspiration for his very first novel ‘’The Macdermots of Ballycloran’’ while taking a walk on the Fargrim to Headford road .He found it to be a very desolate place indeed as was most of the Irish countryside in 1843 ,but as President Mary Mc Aleese said when she launched The Trollope Trail in 2007 ‘’Something happened to his soul’’ here in Drumsna and from being a very unhappy Postal Clerk he found he had an altogether happy life in Ireland . We in Drumsna are very lucky in so much as that of the forty six novels that he subsequently wrote ,the Macdermots is the only one where he uses actual places such as Drumsna , Carrick-on-Shannon, Mohill, Drumshanbo, Aughacashel etc.,Indeed he certainly put the village on the map as the Anthony Trollope Society is Universal with members from all over the world.

Plans for the first International Anthony Trollope Summer School are almost completed and we will be welcoming delegates from all over to the four day event.
