The Connacht Fleadh got off to a cracking start in Mc Loughlin’s of Drumsna on Monday night last with musicians ,singers and dancers raising the rafters at a wonderful session. Fleadh Chairperson Enda Stenson and Drumsna C.C.E. Chairperson Micheal Guckian welcomed the large crowd to Drumsna for the festivities .
On Tuesday local Councillor Sinead Guckian was M.C. for the evening as All Ireland Champion Fionnuala Maxwell had Balladeer Mai Reynolds ( Malone ) to launch her new CD ‘’ Sing a Leitrim Song’’ Both women thrilled the capacity crowd with their singing in their own inimitable style. Fionnuala Maxwell made presentations of Leitrim Crystal to Mai Malone and Micheal Guckian. The crowd then transferred to Duignan’s Lounge for another great session.
On Wednesday evening At the youth session in the Community Centre Brian Mostyn gently brought out the talent of each child as they played a variety of instruments and their love of traditional music shone through , the singing was superb and as for the dancers as they took to the floor one by one until the whole place was heaving with Sean Nos as they showed off their steps encouraged by their teacher Edwina Guckian .
This was an evening to be treasured and stored in one’s memory .The session then transferred to Taylor’s where a great night finished the Drumsna Part of the proceedings The fleadh then transferred to Mohill for another great night in Fitzpatrick’s Ceili House where Edwina and Mikey and a host of others entertained the large crowd . On Friday night the venue was the newly refurbished Canon Donohue Hall where a number of presentations took place during the concert including our own Comhaltas stalwart Maureen Quigley. Competitions then took place over Saturday and Sunday. Congratulations are extended to Drumsna and Mohill branches of C.C.E for their Trojan work which culminated in an excellent week of traditional Fare.

Late Anna Fitzpatrick.
Reading through the Carrick-on-Shannon notes in last week’s’’ Leitrim Observer’’ I noticed the death of Anna Fitzpatrick ex N.T. Miss Maguire as she was known to us here in Drumsna as children was a teacher in Drumsna national school together with John O’ Dowd N.T. from Jamestown for several years, she was the ‘’Mistress ‘’who took the little one’s through the three R’s and the bigger girls from the’’Master’s’’ room for sewing and also boys and girls for singing . Indeed I recall the excitement when she brought in a ‘’new’’ song for us to learn .It was ‘’The Gypsy Rover’’ and to this day I know every word of that song which was a welcome respite from Baidin Eile and the Ar Maidin Mhoc. When we held our school Re-union here in Drumsna in 2000 Secretary Maureen Quigley contacted Miss Maguire to invite her to the occasion , she was unfortunately unwell at the time but sent her good wishes for our celebration .
May her gentle soul rest in peace. Amen.
Thanks
Fionnuala Maxwell would like to extend a huge thank you to the large crowd who attended the launch of her CD “Sing a Leitrim Song” in the Community Centre, Drumsna, last Tuesday evening. Your support was overwhelming. Thanks is also extended to the youngsters from Moyne and Carrigallen; “Ril Og” who provided wonderful music on the night and to their parents. My gratitude goes to Mae Malone who officially launched the CD and sung so beautifully. A big thank you also to the Drumsna ladies who provided tea, sandwiches and a variety of refreshments for guests, in particular Colleen Guckian, Ella Gannon and Eileen Guckian. Your generosity knows no bounds. In true community spirit, the MC on the night was local Councillor Sinead Guckian who as usual did an expert job in promoting our culture and area and I would like to thank her enormously for a job well done.
The CD “Sing a Leitrim Song” is available to purchase in Duignan’s, Drumsna and in Fitzpatrick’s in Mohill, priced at 15 euro.
Thanks again for your support
