Bon Fire night.
The annual Bon Fire will be lit at the Quay side Drumsna at 8pm on this evening Wednesday 23rd of June. This old tradition of lighting bonfires comes from the celebration of the eve of the feast day of St. John The Baptist which is on June 24th . The feast of St. John coincides with the June solstice also referred to as Mid Summer. Many years ago this ancient custom honored Aine the Goddess Queen of Munster. During the festival people prayed for the protection of their crops ,ashes were taken from the fire to spread on the land as a Blessing. It was also common to have music , dancing and singing during this time . Everyone is invited to this old time tradition and refreshments will be on offer for the children.
