Annaduff Brian Boru Millennium Celebrations.

It is recorded in the annals of Ulster that ,in the year1010,King Brian Boru, along with the deposed High King Malachy the 2nd of Meath, visited the Abbey of Annaduff and stayed a night there. The abbey of Annaduff was a short distance to the left if you are going in today’s St. Ann’s Church of Ireland, Annaduff. Brian Boru and Malachy came up the Shannon with their armies in a fleet of long-boats Brian was on a mission to conquer the last of the Ulster Chiefs and to make sure that he had all Ireland under his control. He established himself as the most  greatest and most famous leader Ireland ever knew.

A thousand years ago, the abbey of Annaduff was on the edge of Ulster . Brian Boru had his capital at Kincora which is the modern Town of Killaloe beside Lough Derg. The Shannon was a major highway joining up the two places. It is little wonder, then, that King Brian sailed up the River Shannon to Annaduff.

In the Parish of Annaduff/Drumsna there are plans afoot to mark the Millenium of the visit of Brian Boru. An active committee is already working to put a ‘’Brian Boru Millenium’’ entry into the Carrick-on-Shannon St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This will involve the school children and many musicians . A History written by Des Guckian, is to be published to defray expenses . The Millenium Committee will be holding a collection at Church gates on Saturday/Sunday 20 / 21 February and people are asked to please support generously.
